Elizabeth SWIRE (1827 - 1904)

Emily Elizabeth SWIRE was the
third daughter of Roger SWIRE a
native of Yorkshire, England and Frances Lydia COX of
St. Vincent, West Indies. They moved to the Portland
area of Jamaica. Emily was born on 24 May 1827. Her mother's bible
states she was born in St. Vincent, West Indies, but no record
of the birth or christening has yet been found there.

SWIRE was married 18 December 1845 to Alexander
James BRYMER. The marriage record states she was of
Norwich, Portland Parish, Jamaica at the time of the marriage.
Mr. BRYMER was a merchant of Port Antonio, Portland Parish,
Jamaica. The marriage is recorded in Volume 4, Folio 72 of the
Portland, Jamaica Parish Register.
Emily and A. J. BRYMER had at least
seven children, all born in Jamaica: Amy Agnes BRYMER, James
Arthur BRYMER, Frances Elizabeth "Fanny" BRYMER, Alexander
George BRYMER, Emily Mary (May) BRYMER, Helen Gordon BRYMER and
Charles Henry BRYMER. They might also have had a daughter
named Kate BRYMER.
Alexander James BRYMER is found in
many Jamaican records, including the 1845 Jamaica Almanac in
Surrey County, Portland as proprietor of the 170 acre properties
of Providence and Cottage. In the 1851 Jamaica Almanac Civil
List, he is named as a member of the House of Assembly
representing Portland Parish. He is further mentioned in the
1851 list under the Court of Chancery for the county of Surry as
one of the Masters Extraordinary, and also under the Crown
Office for Surry county. He died on 08 October 1868 in Kingston,
Jamaica.
Emily Elizabeth SWIRE died in Kingston, Jamaica
on May 29, 1904, and was buried the following afternoon. Her
newspaper death notice in The Gleaner of Kingston, Jamaica for
Monday, May 30, 1904 reads:
DEATH NOTICE:
BRYMER - At 91 Duke Street, on Sunday 29th May, EMILY ELIZABETH BRYMER, Relict
of the late Alexander J. BRYMER, Postmaster for Jamaica. Aged 76 years. Funeral
at 4:30 this afternoon. |
