July 29th 1877

Eighteen months have elapsed since I last had the pleasure of seeing your handwriting, and during that period of time written you, without getting any reply. My letter was written and posted in Falmouth, and subsequently your Sister Emily has also written you from Kingston, with the like ill success. This makes me feel very anxious and fear there must be sickness in your family to cause such a long time to elapse without any member of your family writing. I pray that on the receipt of this either yourself, or wife, or Son will favor me with a few lines to acquaint me with the cause of your silence.

I am at present on a visit to dear Lizzie and her kind good Husband. She has now four Children, two for her first husband Harry Page, and two sweet wee pets for her present husband. Her eldest boy "Robert Page" will leave school in December, and will then have to go to work and support himself. He will then be sixteen. Her eldest girl Henrietta Page will leave school at the same time. She will then be 15 years old. Lucy's three Boys are younger and will remain at school some years longer.

I wrote you of Lydia Swire and Alice Swire being both married and both Fashy's daughters being also married and settled in Scotland. Their Mother is at present residing with them.

Hannah's youngest Child "Emily Jane" is engaged to be married in Novbr. next to a Mr. Grant who is Clerk in the Colonial Bank.

Emily's girls are none of them married yet but her third daughter is engaged but I do not know when her marriage will come off. I think this is all the family news I have to give that can interest you so don't think this a stupid letter. I am still thank God in wonderfully good health considering my great age, and am not yet quite a burden on my daughters, for I can still make, and mend clothes for their children. Dear Robert Page has never yet had a suit of clothes made by a tailor. I have always done that for him.

Now I must conclude with much love from Lizzie and myself for and (?) all yours.

Ever your loving Mother
F. L. Swire
