Hannah Jane (SWIRE) HAUGHTON June 28, 1824 - October 3, 1891 The letter on this page was written to Philip SWIRE in Louisiana from his oldest sister Hannah Jane (SWIRE) HAUGHTON in Jamaica. Hannah wrote to her brother from Bowden Pen in Morant, Jamaica, a property owned by her son Roger Swire HAUGHTON, who worked with the prestigious Colonial Bank in Kingston. The letter is dated April 4, and is believed to have been written during the 1870's. (images & transcription below - click on images to enlarge & read letter)

Bowden Pen Morant I always look upon Roger's home more particularly as my own. He is such a good strong dutiful affectionate son & supplies his mother's wants. Not that I would ____ any reflection upon my other dear children for they are all dutiful & affectionate but as none of them have married wealthy men & my girls had nothing of their own I would not possibly look for help save from my dear Roger. I am glad to write of his happiness with an affectionate wife and sweet boy. May God continue ___ to bless them all. -- Fanny

Mr.
Sanguinetti of the Bank. They left Jamaica upwards of 11 years
ago for the other Islands where Mr. S. got very much _____ ____ and
had to resign his appointment. They returned here year before last
very badly off with four children. He has since got a berth in the
government ___ and Fan (?) is doing her best to _________ and pay
their debts, but it is a ____ ____ for her poor thing. Roger has got
his (?) eldest boy (Haughton)
on the ____ at
Walton.
He is a fine little boy and will I hope get on. -- Our dear mother is still active and goes between Lucy & Lizzie. She has been making a long stay with Lizzie but is to accompany Lucy to Falmouth next week. Emily and her girls are pretty much as usual they all help themselves by teaching. -- I dare say you heard through Roger that your old friend Mr. Pendergast has of ____ in the ____ after years of supporting his ___ & children ___ in Town. ___ and united love Phil. ________ for affectionate
